SUMMARY: Directs and coordinates day-to-day Racing, Pari-Mutuels, and Sports Book department operations including Racing Office, Mutuels, Off-Track Wagering Facilities and Account Wagering (telephone and internet) operations in order to assist in reaching profitability, guest satisfaction, workforce strength and compliance goalsProvides encouragement, sets high expectations, and sets proud and positive examples necessary to ensure a fun, exciting and professional working environment for our staff and a pleasant and entertaining experience for our guests. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 

 

  • Oversee all aspects of racing operations including monitoring of handle and financial performance management of the backside operations; oversee Racing Secretary who coordinated the condition book and management of purse account 
  • Development and maintenance of racing related events and activities to promote racing product, increase awareness and drive incremental revenue 
  • Ensure integrity of racing product and accountability of horsemen and racing employees to maintain expected standards 
  • Confer with property Vice President & General Manager and other staff to review achievements and identify required changes in goals or objectives resulting from current status and conditions. 
  • Communication with the Board of Stewards, Pennsylvania Racing Commission, horsemen, including representatives of HBPA board of directors on a regular basis. 
  • Respresentative on Industry Trade Associations and Organizations. 
  • Liaison between horsemen and property management. 
  • Interface with the PA Thoroughbred Breeder's Association and the Rack Track Chaplaincy. 
  • Perform special studies and direct special projects as directed by the Vice President & General Manager of Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course and Corporate Vice President of Racing.  
  • Ensure the highest level of quality and standards. 
  • Assure management and employee morale is maintained at a high level. 
  • Actively coordinate with senior facilities and maintenance staff to ensure, quality racing performances. 
  • Oversees the Sports Book department and supervises Sports Book Manager.  

 

Essential Duties Relative to Performance Review: 

  • Provide professional representation at internal and external meetings and events. 
  • Develop and lead a high performance department to include at least one internal successor to the Director of Racing Operations role. 
  • Create and maintain an environment of mutual and reciprocal trust, respect and confidence within the department and when dealing with internal/external guests. 
  • Reward, recognize, coach and counsel department employees. 
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of employee performance and department incidents. 
  • Demonstrate abilities with PENN’s Leadership Competency Model that includes Visioning, Decisive Judgment, Leading Change, Business Acumen, Driving for Results, Guest Focus, Integrity, Resilience, Leading Teams, Coaching and Developing Others, and Relationship Management. 
  • Ensure interactions with internal and external guests follow the guidelines of the customer service program. 
  • Adhere to all Corporate and local policies, procedures, and operating guidelines. 
  • Demonstrate abilities to meet performance expectations with Communications, Initiative/Problem Solving, Guest Service/Interpersonal Relations, Work Habits and Conduct, and Responsible Gaming/Business Ethics. 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and coaching employees; addressing concerns; and resolving problems.  
  • Supervisory responsibility over Pari-Mutuels, Racing, and Sports Book departments.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Bachelor’s Degree, 5 or more years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Intermediate computer knowledge; MS Office
  • Must qualify for a license with the Pennsylvania State Racing Commission and meet any credentialing requirements of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.   

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Walking 25% of the time 
  • Sitting 45% of the time  
  • Standing 25% of the time 
  • Bending and lifting 5% of the time  
  • Lifting/moving maximum of 25 lbs.  
  • Ability to see 20/20, color, and/or peripherally
