ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  

The following and other duties may be assigned as necessary: 

  • Develops and implements departmental organization.  
  • Directs racing management team for department specific goals / promotions. 
  • Focuses increasing handle revenue through both on-track and off-track (export) wagering channels  
  • Prepares and implements monthly simulcast schedule. Plans and implements new business strategies.  
  • Responsible for creating and establishing a safe and positive working environment. 
  • Maintains relationships with vendors, suppliers and establishes cost effective strategies. 
  • Oversees Race Office and Mutuel departments as well as track announcer, video patrol, and all other departments affiliated with the daily racing operation on-track. 
  • Interacts with racing customers in developing promotions and strategies in order to increase tracked handle and overall handle. 
  • Works with the Marketing department on strategies and initiatives to promote racing and racing player rewards. 
  • Understands all aspects of racing and wagering. 
  • Controls and manages labor costs, expenses, and other financial metrics. 
  • Ability to understand and review weekly, monthly, and yearly financials. 
  • Ability to forecast handle and budgets and develop capital plans related to racing. 
  • Ability to report and receive information between Meadows Racing and the PA Harness Racing Commission and implement various directives and initiatives. 
  • Liaison with Meadows Standardbred Owners Association (MSOA) and handles all relationships with MSOA members, board and executive leadership.  
  • Ability to work on various initiatives involving the United States Trotting Association and other national racing organizations 
  • Ability to understand and abide by union contracts. 
  • Capable of adhering and implementing all property operational standards 
  • Work with Corporate VP – Racing on initiatives as directed 
  • Any other assigned duties and responsibilities

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS   

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • College Degree or equivalent experience 
  • Four (4) years’ supervisory or management experience, preferably horse racing industry 
  • Able to follow verbal and written instructions. 
  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively. 
  • Able to communicate information to subordinates effectively. 
  • Able to coach, discipline, and motivate staff. 
  • Knowledge of racing and wagering terminology 
  • Knowledge of PA Harness Racing Commission rules and regulations and ability to secure appropriate licensing 
  • Basic math skills 
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Applications 
  • Able to be proactive with all business needs. 
  • Able to read and comprehend contractual language. 
  • Able to make sound/professional business decisions and retain his/her composure in stressful/confrontational situations. 
  • Demonstrate ability to work independently. 
  • Pass Random Drug Test 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES                    

  • Responsible for staff development and training programs. 
  • Responsible for rewards and recognition program to maximize employee engagement. 
  • Evaluates team members within department and delivers constructive feedback to employees regarding performance. 
  • Determines recommendation for staffing (including interviewing and hiring) and scheduling (planning, assigning, and directing work) to meet business needs.  
  • Determines work procedures and expedites workflow. 
  • Responsible for employee performance (disciplining, coaching, counseling).

LANGUAGE SKILLS  

Ability to read and interpret documents in English, such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to read and communicate verbally in English. Written communication skills in English may also be required. 

 

REASONING ABILITY  

Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. 

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS 

Employees must be able to qualify for licenses and permits required by federal, state, and local regulations.
