Initial placement within the salary range is based on an individual's relevant knowledge, skills, and experience. - Adheres to all departmental and property policies and procedures regarding guest service standards. - Assumes responsibility for ensuring a fair race and that all rules and regulations are followed; judges are assigned to different posts and report to the Patrol judge. - Plans, directs, coordinates, and reviews the work of the team members; assigns work activities, projects, and programs; reviews and evaluates work products, methods, and procedures; ensures guest service; meets with team members to identify and resolve problems. - Selects, trains, motivates, and evaluates team members; provides team member training; works with team members to correct deficiencies; implements and/or approves discipline as appropriate. - Prepares and analyzes complex reports using writing and analytical skills as needed; prepares and approves federal and state reporting; ensures reporting compliance. - Attends and participates in professional group meetings; maintains awareness of new trends and innovations in the judicial field. - Performs all other related and compatible duties as assigned. - Maintains strict confidentiality in all company matters. WHEN ASSiGNED TO PLACiNG JUDGE - Stands at the time the horses pass the winning post in each race; places the horses in the order of finish and displays results. - Makes public decision as promptly as possible; enforces all rules and regulations. - Determines the places of the horse at finish of each race; considers only the relative position of the horses. - Works with other judges to resolve disagreements. - Reviews the weighed in after the race and verifies the correct weight; notifies other judges of the findings. WHEN ASSiGNED TO PATROL JUDGE - Observes all activities of the race track within the assigned area; reports every violation of the racing rules, every violation of the rules of decorum, lameness or unfitness of any horse, lack of proper racing equipment, and any action on the track which could improperly affect the results of the race. - Maintains constant communication with judges during every race and immediately informs judges of rule violations and any improper or unusual happening which occurs at the track. - Submits daily reports of observations of the race. - May attend hearings or inquiries on violations and testify under oath. WHEN ASSiGNED TO PADDOCK JUDGE - Organizes the field and ensures compliance for post parades in accordance with schedule and directions; supervises the identification of horses in the race. - inspects horses for changes in equipment, broken or faulty equipment, head numbers, and saddle pads; checks horses and drivers in and out; informs judges of any change to racing equipment or shoes before the race. - Oversees gate team members; may supervise Blacksmith or Ferrier; ensures that only authorized personnel are permitted in the paddock area. - immediately notifies other judges of anything that would change, delay, or affect the racing program; notifies judges of any horses returning after having entered the track for post parade and before the start of a race. - Notifies judges of all trainers and grooms who leave the paddock in an emergency; inspects and supervises the maintenance of all emergency equipment. - Monitors the cleanliness of the paddock; reports any cruelty to any horse which may be observed.
- High School Diploma or equivalent and three (3) years of experience as a Placing, Paddock, or Patrol Judge required. - Must have thorough knowledge and understanding of all aspects of racing and racing operations. - Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills; must be fluent and literate in English. - Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and professionalism. - Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. - Must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, and Outlook). - Must have the ability to interact with guests, staff, and colleagues and resolve problems and conflicts in a diplomatic and tactful manner. - Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. - Must have excellent problem-solving, organizational, and time management skills. - Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. - Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with team members at all levels of the organization.
