ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following and other duties may be assigned as necessary:

  • Assign and supervise work of Assistant Starters at track assigned to during morning training.
  • Start Races and perform the functions of the Head Starter in their absence.
  • Record and maintain daily schooling records.
  • Collaborate with proper officials to ensure schooling records and equipment changes are accurate and complete.
  • Communicate information with horsemen and trainers when needed.
  • Load and handle horses in the starting gate during the races.
  • Work in the mornings schooling unruly horses.
  • Teaching young horses the ways of the starting gate.
  • Review horses that need to be added or removed from the “Starter’s List”.
  • Write “Okay Cards” for horses that have not raced.
  • Assist the state veterinarian with injured horses and assist track maintenance by loading injured horses on the horse ambulance.
  • Assist EMT crew with injured riders.
  • Teach/train/mentor new Assistant Starters
  • Responsible for the maintenance security & safety of the 4 & ½ gate Starter’s area.
  • Responsible for maintaining the gate.
  • Responsible for setting of the gate.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Applicants must have at least two years of verifiable work experience as an Assistant Starter or with starting gate operations.
  • This role is highly specialized and requires prior experience working with horses, as well as the ability to manage the demanding physical requirements of the job.
  • Previous experience in starting races is strongly preferred.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Although this position does not oversee any direct reports, it is responsible for supervising and directing the Assistant Starters.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, write, and communicate verbally in English.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

For every year of employment: Obtain and maintain a license by the WV Racing Commission and/or WV Lottery as may be required for this position.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. This position demands the employee to be on their feet during their shifts.
